In ancient Egypt beer was often drank instead of water. This was due to the bacteria content in the Nile River. The beer was obviously consumed in excess and still managed to get people drunk on a daily basis. What is worse is that often the drink of choice when working and building the pyramids was beer.

The workers were paid with beer at the time and were often on a sustained alcohol buzz throughout the entire building process. The meals provided to them were also supplied with beer instead of water.

Chicha is a traditional Peruvian corn beer which dates back to the Incan times. It contained one secret ingredient which separated it from the rest of the beers made in this era. This was a well… human spit.

Our mouths are a host to many different bacteria and enzymes which can lead to interesting things like spit beer. In this instance they were used to replace the malting process used to make beer. The fermentation process of the corn can be started by just chewing on it while hydrating it with your spit. The corn would then be spat out into the beer mix. It tastes like sour beer and is actually a popular refreshment in Peru today.

Another bizarre yet surprising fact about beer is that it is actually closely related to marijuana. The flavoring agent used in hops and beer is a member of the Cannabaceae family. This family also covers the Cannabis sativa which is more commonly known as the marijuana plant.

The two plants however are not exactly interchangeable. Just like a human and an ape would not be interchangeable even after considering our striking similarities. The results of trying to make marijuana beer usually lead to disappointment as represented by the lack of presence in today’s market.

The foam is one of the most underrated parts of beer. Often new drinkers and sometimes seasoned drinkers will frown upon foam on top of their newly poured beverage. However these are the same people who will be missing out when it comes to what the foam can provide.

The foam forms a very important part of the beer. Often referred to as the foamy “head”, will often tell you about the quality of the beer and how well your glass is cleaned. The foamy head will never form on a dirty glass which actually tells you a lot about the place you choose to drink at. Foam which hangs around long and leaves a lace-like pattern once the glass is empty is only produced by high-quality beer. Hence why stout beers such as Guinness will leave a near perfect head on top of your beer. The lack of a head often means that the beer will be flat and more so bland tasting.
