Naturally beers can be incredibly hard to rank just because of the individual tastes of the examiner/ tester. This can often lead to stray results and outliers in tasting competitions. However when it comes to the title of “The Best Beer”, it is given to a drink called “Westvleteren 12”. This beer is a 10.2 percent ABV Trappist beer which has been in production since 1940.

The beer is actually a dark beer and boasts a refined chocolatey taste. Usually it is not distributed and is only available by driving to the monastery which makes it, which is located in the countryside in Belgium. The process of buying it is odd at best, usually it is bought straight from the monks and will mean waiting in a long line of cars.

In 2012 the monks needed a new roof for their monastery. They exported the beer to various countries for $75 and $85 for a six-pack which came with two tasting glasses. Needless to say the beer sold out within minutes and the monks made the money they needed.

So the older days were pretty dangerous considering we did not know many effects that things like alcohol, tobacco and drugs gave us. This meant that often things like alcohol were given to the wrong audience out of purely not knowing better.

This exact thing happened in Belgium in the 1970’s. Table beer was still being served in schools refectories as it was not seen as doing any harm. Little did they know, they were harming the brains of young minds around the country. This was promptly changed after the effects of alcohol were realized.
